A RUGBY mad Laurencekirk lad had a dream come true recently, when he was picked to be a mascot for the Scottish rugby team.

Laurencekirk Primary pupil Scott Lewis (8), who plays for the Mackie Minis rugby team in Stonehaven, was picked out of a hat to be a mascot at the Scotland v Italy match at Murrayfield on March 19.

He said: “I really enjoyed being a Scotland mascot and want to thank the Scottish Rugby Union and MAFPRFC.

“It was a wonderful experience so thank you to everybody involved in it. I enjoyed doing practise runs onto the pitch at Murrayfield with crowds cheering us on! The part I enjoyed best was - all of it! I especially loved meeting the players afterwards, and running onto the pitch good and proper!”

He added: “It was the best day of my life so far!”

Scott’s mum Katrin said: “We all went as a family to support Scott and Scotland on Saturday 19th - and Scotland won 21-8, so a lucky mascot too!

“It was a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which Scott and the rest of our family will never forget.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated team of coaches at MAFPRFC for providing fun and inspiring training sessions and tournaments - their enthusiasm helps countless children to enjoy rugby, and maybe a future Scotland player may come from one of these days?!”
