Lyall represents Scotland

Stonehaven’s Lyall Paterson (21) represented Scotland by competing in the Men’s European Squash Championships in Finland last weekend. In an enthralling climax to their competition, Scotland needed to beat the Czech Republic by 12-0 in order to finish 6th and maintain their prestigious Division 1 status.

The team saw Alan Clyne of Inverness keep the dream alive with an 11/5. 11/8.11/2 victory.

After a nervous start, Lyall continued the winning theme with a 12/10, 11/3,11/3 victory.

Next up was Chris Small now living in Florence, Italy who managed a confident 11/5, 11/9, 11/1 win.

With nine games secured, Scotland could not afford any errors and needed Shetland’s Jamie Macaulay to complete the task.

This was Jamie’s first match of the tournament and came with huge pressure and expectation and he was soon 4-2 down in the first game.

However with tremendous energy and motivation from the sidelines, Jamie secured an 11/8, 11/9, 12/10 win to ensure Scotland remained in the top tier of European squash.

Following Scotland’s great finishing performances, Lyall said this experience was the best he had encountered in squash and he was happy to share it with his friends/team-mates in ensuring Scotland remained amongst the elite in European Squash.

The Scottish ladies continued the winning theme by finishing 5th after being seeded 7th.
