Mackie P5s travelled South to Stirling County RFC for their third tournament of the year. There were nine Primary 5 teams and Mackie were in the larger pool of five teams.
The first match was against one of the host teams, Stirling Monument. This was a tough match and Mackie played well and at the final whistle it was a draw at 3 all. The next game was against an Ayrshire side, Marr. The first half saw just one try, and this was from Mackie with Marr keeping the pressure on Mackie with very effective rucking.
It all changed in the second half with tries scored by both teams in quick succession in the first few minutes. Again it looked like being another 3 all draw until in the last phase of play Mackie scored the winning try.
The third match against Biggar went all Mackie’s way with Biggar struggling to score until in the last minute Biggar managed one try giving Mackie a 5-1 win.
The final match was against Dunfermline; Mackie had a convincing lead of 4-0 at half time, then Dunfermline started the second half with a quick try and continued to put pressure on Mackie at their try line. The ball was turned over and after a great run the length of the pitch Mackie scored again. The final score was 8-2 to Mackie.
With three wins and a draw Mackie were top of their pool and in the final. The host club’s other P5 team, Stirling Castle were the winners of the other, smaller, pool and were to be their opponents.
A large crowd gathered to watch as the finals were played consecutively on the pitch in front of the grandstand which added to the occasion.
The P5’s were the only Mackie team to reach a final, and the host club took five of the eight places available. This was a very physical game with the whole team working together with frequent substitutions due to injured and tired players. Mackie played very well but the hosts played a good game and won 5-2. The Medals were handed out by Grant Gilchrist from Edinburgh rugby who was part of the team that recently beat Toulouse.
The Mackie team was Calum, Cameron, James, Jamie, Joseph, Luke, Mathew, Oscar, Owen, Rory and Tom.
