The Beast Race is looming large with just two weeks left for our brave/stupid group of reporters to get ready. This week, Scott Milne at the Buchan Observer discusses his plight.
Over the past fortnight, Martyn Simpson of the Deeside Piper and Lee McCann of the Mearns Leader have already shared their training experiences.
The group have almost reached the half way mark to raise their target for the CLAN cancer support, and the team are pushing to reach it before the race on Saturday 26th September,
The newest member of Johnston Press participating, Scott has already put in a few gym sessions in preparation, but knows he has more to do if he is to walk away with his head held high.
He said: “I’m far from overweight, but I’ve definitely let the toon ribs expand since the days of progressing from football playing child to beer drinking man.
“To get to a respectable level of fitness I’ve put in a few hours at the gym, mostly on the treadmill but also working on some upper body exercises so that I can take on the walls, monkey bars and other obstacles in the race.
“I’ve been lucky in that I’m already feeling an improvement in my overall fitness, but I haven’t dared take on a 10k yet. The most I’ve done at the gym has been 5k, and walking the next day proved to be very difficult indeed. I will still need to put in a few more sessions if I am want to be a functioning human afterwards”
