On Sunday, the Mackie Academy FPRFC U16 Rugby team defeated Huntly RFC by 94 points to 5, in the first round of the regional cup.

What made this more remarkable is that Mackie played with only 12 players, against a full 15 Huntly team and sub, over 70 minutes.

Unfortunately the fact that Mackie only had 12 players forced them to forfeit the match, as 13 players are required for a competitive match. This victory resulted in a loss.

Mackie scored three quick tries. Huntly then scored a consolation try, their last points of the game. The halftime score was 68-5.

Mackie continued where they left off in the second half, but were then forced to play most of the 2nd half with only 11 players, with Cameron Hepburn forced off not feeling well.

Not surprisingly, the second half points slowed down only increasing the score a further 26-0, but the effort the boys put in hadn’t.

A team obviously enjoying themselves, played some text book rugby, with excellent passing, running, crash balls, rucking and support play.

It was one of their best ever performances, with a lot of the lads playing well in unfamiliar positions. The correct decisions were taken on the field at the right times. Some brilliant play which bodes well for all of the boys.

Try scorers were Zander Begg (5), Iwan Kelly (3), Kieran Fulton (2), David Talbert (2), Josh Law (1) and Ben Martin (1). Kieran kicked 12 out of 14 conversions.

The other team members who also deserve a mention Lee Robertson, Ryan Bellu, Josh Sharpe, Ian Macey and Cameron Hepburn. A mention also for the stand in coach James Sadio.

Although forfeited, the team will now play in the Shield, in which they reached the semi-finals last year at U15 level. On this performance they should do well in the competition.
