Mackie Micros played host to a total of fourteen teams from Ellon, Deeside, Alford, Garioch, Grammar and Aberdeen Wanderers last weekend.

This was part of the annual Mackie Minis Tournament held at Mackie Academy.

The strength of this section of the Mackie club meant that three “home” squads were to compete, these being the Mackie Reds, Blacks and Quarters.

At this level, the competition consists of a “round robin” affair where each team play four or five matches against varied opposition. Although there is no ultimate winning team, and all players win participation medals, individual games can be very competitive and set the youngsters up for real competition in the years ahead.

Throughout the tournament the Mackie teams really showed what they were made of with some strong running, brave tag tackling and outstanding effort.

All the hard training that had been done over the winter paid dividends with some great trys and great results in some very fast paced games, which showcased some of the best Micro rugby to be seen in the North East of Scotland.

All of the games, with all of the clubs, were played in a great sporting atmosphere with handshakes and cheers at the end of each match.

At the finish, all fourteen teams then marched together behind a piper to main marquee where the players received their medals from Edinburgh Rugby player Sean Kennedy. The youngsters received not only a medal and a hotdog, but the congratulations and cheers of an appreciative crowd of parents and supporters.

All in all, it was a great day and if these young players are the future of rugby in the North East, the future is bright indeed.
