Stonehaven defeated Royal Montrose in the second round of the Mail on Sunday National Golf classic competition at home with the five-man team winning 3.5 to 1.5.
Ross McAllan who was given that role, playing par golf through to the 11th hole his match finished 8 & 7 for a good opening point.
The second match out saw Alan Officer behind right from the start after putting his opening tee shot out of bounds. He required to win the last hole to finish all square and gain a valuable half point, this was achieved with a solid par 3, Alan came back in a one over par 35 and this included a ball out at the tough 12th hole.
In third, Brian Lawson played the front nine in 31 shots, his first bogey came at the 12th where his opponent started a fine comeback recovering some form and also using his three shots he was receiving on the back nine. With the game at dormie two and giving a shot away it looked like only a birdie for the home team at 17 would stop this match going the distance. However, when the visitor raced his birdie chance well past two putts for the home captain it was enough to take the point.
Grant Robb struggled a bit with Montrose’s Azzi Paton with the game finishing on the 16th hole in the visitors’ favour. Graeme McFarlane played a steady game, going out in 35 shots which was good enough to be two up which was all the better after being two down after three holes. Graeme‘s back to back birdies at 16 and 17 was good enough for a 3&2 win.
