Success for local athletics club

The Scottish Secondary Schools Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow on Thursday, February 7, saw success for a number of Banchory Stonehaven AC athletes representing their different schools.

There was a bronze medal for Michael Ferguson (Mackie Academy) in the Over 16 boys 1500 metres, with a personal best time of 4.04 98.

There were silver medals for Lindsey Young and Alisha Rees both from Torphins. Competing for Robert Gordons College in Over 16 girls, Lindsey won her 60 metres heat and semi-final, and came second in the final with a time of 8.16.

Alisha (Banchory Academy) in the Under 16 age group, also won her heat and semi, and in an extremely close final, came second to Jill Cherry (St Margarets, Airdrie) with a time of 8.05, three hundredths of a second off the winning time.

Both girls went on to compete in the 200 metres in their respective age groups, Lindsay coming second in her heat, with a time of 27.45, and 5th in the semi, with a time of 28.98. Alisha had the fastest qualifying heat time of 26.93, came first in her semi, 27.06. and fifth in the final, 27.15.

Kate Samuel (Aboyne Academy) achieved two personal bests, with a seventh place in the long jump, 4.72m, and sixth place in the shot putt, 9m 21. Polly Christie competed in the 800metres and 60m Hurdles.

Club athletes Daniel Rees from Torphins, and Hamish Leeson from Crathes competed at the same venue over the past weekend in the Under 18 men Combined Events Indoor Championship. Daniel came second and Hamish third.

It was the first time that both boys had taken part in this type of competition, at this level, which comprised 60m, 60m hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot putt, pole vault and 1000-metres and both boys should be congratulated for their successes.

Also competing over the weekend in the female Under 16 and Under 18 pentathlon were Eve Sealy and Kate Samuel, again good experience for both these athletes. Michael Ferguson also set a new personal best time of 9.10.85 in the Senior men 3000 metres competition .

Club athletes have also had success in the recent Running Shop Winter Series Cross Country race, held at Haddo.

Ewan Macmillan came first in the U15 Boys three-mile race, Claire Stewart third in U15 girls, Claire McGarvey second and Frances Sealy third in the U13 girls two-mile race. The last of the series races will be held this Sunday, February 17, at Balgownie, Aberdeen.
