Tennis club enjoyssuccessful summer
Stonehaven Tennis Club has seen many of it’s players enjoying success this summer with members competing throughout Scotland.
The club has players of all ages ranging from 6 to 60+ who have taken part in events around the north east and further afield.
In early July well over a dozen members competed at the City of Aberdeen tournament at Westburn Tennis Centre.
Annabel Burns (18&U), Lewis Findlay (10&U) and Brian Morgan (60+) all played some great tennis to win singles titles, while Phil Roscoe reached the final of the Men’s over 45s and Kieran Hamilton won the men’s singles consolation event.
There was further success in the doubles where David Hamilton/Steve Thomson won the Men’s 45+ and Annabel Burns/Rosie Sterk won the girls 14&U.
One month later the showpiece event in local tennis took place as Cults Tennis Club hosted the Stewart Milne NE Scotland Championships.
Annabel Burns followed up her success at Westburn by winning both the 16&U and 18&U singles, beating club mate Aoife Aitken in the 18s final.
Lewis Findlay also backed up his Westburn title with a repeat performance, winning the 10&U event with a fine victory against North County teammate Benji Hine in the final.
The 8&U event had 15 players competing yet saw an all STC final with Daniel Tibbetts coming through in a close encounter against Gregor McIver.
Jodie Harris played very well to finish runner-up in the 12&U girls event, while brother Daniel did likewise to reach the semi-finals of the 9&U competition despite being a year younger than many of his rivals.
Amongst club members competing further afield this summer has been Patrick Young who has been making his mark nationally with some impressive results in the 14&U age group. Glasgow has been a happy hunting ground for Patrick with a great run to the final of the Newlands Junior Open last week – no. 1 seed Cameron Kerr being his QF scalp.
In July at Giffnock another final was reached with a narrow defeat to local rival Ross Martin at the final hurdle.
Patrick’s greatest success however came at Strathgryffe where he won the Scottish (closed) Championships beating Ross Martin in the semi and another North County teammate, Scott Hamilton, in the final.
Kirsteen McIver from Stonehaven Tennis Club said: “Well done to all the members who have taken part in competitions this summer, you have done a fantastic job of putting the club on the map.”
