Local pipeband in Highland success
The junior section of a north-east pipeband were celebrating last week after scooping a slew of prizes at a local Highland Games.
The youngsters from Newtonhill Pipeband won awards in every competition at the Braemar Junior Highland Games.
The games, which attracts entries from all over Scotland, is a traditional Highland Games for under-18s with all the usual events including dancing, light and heavy events as well as piping and drumming.
The band, who have just returned from a six day trip to France to commemorate the centenary of the Start of the Battle of the Somme, managed 10 entries in piping and drumming and they successfully won in every contested section.
The prize winner were Tain Robbie and Alistair Graham (2nd and 3rd in the chanter competition), Peter McEwan (second in the solo piping), Cameron Taylor (1st in side drumming) and the quartet of Peter McEwan, Abbie Wright, Calum Graham and Tain Robbie (winners of the piping quartet).
Pipe Major Domhnull McLennan said “The band are proud of all of the younger members who overcome their nerves to take part and obviously give a big congratulations to all the prize winners.
“This is a great reward for all of our tutors who devote a lot of time teaching the rudiments of the instruments and to the juniors themselves who have put in the hours of practice to get to the level they have attained.
“Well done to all!”
The junior band pipe major, Peter McEwan said “We didn’t know till just before the competition that we were going to compete as a foursome but we’ve practiced enough together and that shone through when we were playing.
“I’m really happy to be the first trophy-winning pipe major for Newtonhill.”
The band, practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Portlethen Academy.
They are a regular sight at events in the area and are always on the look out for new members.
They are a Grade 4B pipeband and perform at functions throughout the year.
